Reverse DNS and PTR records

Reverse DNS, also called a PTR record, maps an IP address back to a hostname.

Why it matters

PTR records are commonly checked by mail systems and monitoring tools. If you run email services, a correct PTR record is important.

Requirements

  • The hostname should resolve forward to the same IP address.
  • The hostname should be a real domain you control.
  • It should not be a generic or misleading name.

To request a reverse DNS change, open a support ticket and include the IP address and hostname you want configured.
